MY DEFINITION OF SUCCESS
Success is identifying what we are fascinated with and then applying our gifts and strengths to make it happen. I believe that if we work hard at something and enjoy the process that is success. I don’t believe in labels or positions or titles. Success can be about growing in a career or a personal feat or helping someone reach their north star. The key is taking action and feeling empowered to propel ourselves in a particular direction.

My leadership workshops are always filled with young leaders who may be new to an organization or new to an industry. They arrive excited to fill their leadership toolbox with skills or knowledge to help them grow in their careers and jobs. Being new to a career can be both filled with possibilities as well as fears of the unknown. Sometimes a young leader’s enthusiasm can be misinterpreted for a “need it now” attitude. But the truth is new leaders are eager to learn so they can make impactful contributions to their teams and companies.
So where is a young leader to begin? How can new leaders learn to be strong decision-makers and communicators
I have always wanted to attend this kind of presentation but never had the opportunity. I still dream of being a presenter one day. I watch so many of them on YouTube and each time I am inspired after listening to the speakers’ words. It is extraordinary how a well-crafted story and talk can help us dream bigger and reach further into our minds to think differently. The direction of our careers can even be re-routed by exposing ourselves to this experience. Have you guessed by now where I went?

Leadership is not about a position or title. Leadership is not about taking over a team and dictating what needs to be accomplished. Leadership is not about lecturing others to make sure our ideas are selected for a solution. Leadership is not about being the loudest or smartest in the room.
So what is leadership all about?
Leadership is all about becoming empowered and helping others become empowered. It is about creating cultures of empowerment within organizations and teams. When we feel empowered we can lead with confidence and compassion. We can impact our worlds of work in meaningful and purposeful ways.
Here are five tactics to becoming an empowered leader:
It’s the worst feeling in the world thinking that we are not really capable or talented or intelligent. Even though we may be successful in our professions and colleagues or clients may be thrilled with our performance, we don’t believe it. Instead of acknowledging our contributions or value, we make excuses for why we reached certain goals or milestones. We are unable to accept our worth and accomplishments.
This is known as imposter syndrome and is not that uncommon. In fact, this week an Oscar winner, Viola Davis shared her deep frustrations in dealing with this very feeling.
